THE PATCH CIC

The Patch is a Community Interest Company (CIC) working to teach young adults with learning disabilities and autism skills for work and life through horticulture and connecting with nature. Our vision is to see more young people with learning disabilities in employment or training by 2030, with The Patch being a starting point for them to grow and flourish.

HORTICULTURE

The Patch is located on West Pike Fish Farm, an 85 acre orchard in the Low Weald of Kent on the banks of the river Teise. It has been an apple farm for 5 generations of the Smith family. We are home to a variety of endangered species including nightingales, great crested newts, and a range of native plants. South East Rivers Trust are working with us to create wetland habitats next to the river. Learners can develop skills needed to support the management of the following habitats: ponds, ancient woodland, hedges, scrubland and wildflower meadows.

ANIMAL CARE

Currently 2 donkeys, a few chickens, Buddy the dog and 3 cats call The Patch their home, but soon we will have some ducks too. The donks and chooks provide wonderful manure for us to add to our compost heaps, as we compost all our waste. They are the best lawnmowers and pest controllers. Buddy, our therapy dog is always on hand to spread a little joy and just loves to show people around the farm. Everyone has the opportunity to develop their own relationship with these animals and gain experience and knowledge in how to care for them.
